CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG MEDICAL CENTRE, Hong Kong
2021
The new Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Centre (CUHKMC) is designed to offer a new model of healthcare to provide quality healthcare that would be affordable to the middle class with a price range near the lower end of the private market. With over 500 new beds, the new Medical Centre is intended to relieve stress on the public health care sector.
At 15 storeys, the 100,000s.m. Medical Centre is located on a prime site right outside the University MTR Station at the foot of the Chinese University of Hong Kong campus. Nestled in the surrounding verdant environment, the design of the Medical Centre centers on new concepts of patient wellness, offering pleasant healing environment both indoors and outdoors with maximum use of greening, courtyards and gardens. Ensuring a healthy working environment for clinical staff is also a major design consideration where the functional planning is optimized for clinical operational flows. Staff areas are specifically designed as decompression zones as well as providing opportunities for spontaneous interaction of clinical, research and teaching staff.
Designed around two internal courtyards, the ward mix of single, double and 4-bed rooms fits neatly into a universal grid. It offers future flexibility to accommodate different bed types and to add bed spaces as necessary. Non-ward floors used currently for non-clinical or administrative uses could also be converted to wards, should space become available to relocate these supporting facilities to other areas of the Medical Centre.
Expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2020, the Medical Centre will provide a full range of in-patient & out-patient medical services including General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Oncology, Traumatology, Paediatrics, Cardiology, Geriatrics, Renal Medicine & Urology, General Medicine, Family Medicine, Chinese Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesiology, Pharmacy, Psychiatry and Mental Health. In addition, the Medical Centre will also play the role of teaching, training and development of healthcare professionals/medical community of the University.
